Avail-TVN Releases List of Top 20 On Demand Movies of All Time
Based on National Sample of 14 Million Homes, List Is Dominated By Recent Theatrical Hits
Sherman Oaks, CA, June 9, 2010 - Avail-TVN, the largest digital media services company in North America, today released a list of the top 20 most-watched movies on demand. Based on a national sample of more than 14 million homes, the list illustrates the growth of “Movies on Demand” over the last three years. With increased consumer awareness of and access to Video On Demand (VOD) services, and the growing prevalence of day and date releases (availability of movies on demand at the same time as the DVD release), the list is dominated by recent theatrical releases including The Hangover, Twilight, Gran Torino, Four Christmases, and The Proposal.
Avail-TVN delivers linear and on demand content from more than 200 programmers to more than 50 million homes, through more than 250 service providers. The company has provided theatrical releases for home viewing for more than ten years, but has seen consumer demand for in-home entertainment trend upward sharply in the last three years. As the number of on demand enabled households has grown and studios and other programmers make more content available on demand, consumption of VOD content continues to grow. In the past three years, Avail-TVN has seen growth in VOD movie rentals of nearly 200%.
The Top 20 On Demand movies of all time (with theatrical release year) are:
1. The Hangover (2009)

Of the twenty movies on the list, eleven were available on demand on the day the movie was released on DVD. Fourteen of the twenty were released theatrically in 2008 or later. VOD data is incomplete for movies released theatrically in 2010 as most are still available in video on demand.
“The fact that the movies on the Top 20 list are so recent illustrates the growth of the movies on demand category and highlights the shift in studio release strategies to better meet consumer demands,” said Doug Sylvester, Chief Strategy Officer, Avail-TVN. “Strong VOD movie performance is continuing in 2010 and we expect to see three or four new additions to the Top 10 list this year. VOD is emerging as a key channel for digital media delivery.”
