TVN Entertainment Introduces Ground-Breaking Interactive VOD Tool
Burbank, California - January 28, 2008 - TVN Entertainment Corp., the world’s largest television on demand company, today announced the launch of its ground-breaking VOD solution, iPRI – an advanced interactive tool that allows programmers to dynamically update VOD metadata before, during, and after asset distribution to VOD servers. The tool, which includes an intuitive web-based dashboard interface, gives content owners the ability to make real-time changes to on-demand titles, program synopsis, actors, price, genre, and folder placement without workflow interruption or cost to re-pitch. Mediacom, Bend Broadband, and Lionsgate were among the first TVN clients to participate in the rollout.
Initial results from the rollout illustrate that the ability to manipulate metadata and adjust program attributes in real time can drive usage, awareness and revenue. iPRI, allows programmers to partner with distributors to set up business rules surrounding metadata changes to VOD assets on a site by site basis. The rollout proved that these changes caused no detrimental effect on the distributor’s technology or systems. Participants across the board experienced how increased flexibility creates a positive impact on revenues and supports the ability to enhance consumer awareness within both the transactional and free on demand categories. iPRI also underscored how access to consistent and accurate data is integral to successful implementation of VOD promotions.
“Until now, the single biggest complaint voiced by the content community has been that the VOD platform is not flexible enough,” said Jim Riley, executive vice president of TVN Entertainment. “Not only does iPRI revolutionize on-demand from a static to a dynamic environment, it allows each programmer and distributor to set up specific rules by metadata field and on a site by site basis. With this toolset, programmers can now respond immediately to VOD usage and, in partnership with distributors, enhance the value of a given VOD title exponentially.”
Lionsgate, which used iPRI to test a “Last Chance” menu category at the end of their titles’ windows, saw increased overall buys, generating incremental revenue for themselves and the distributor.
“We have been waiting for a VOD application like this for a long time,” said Jon Ferro, Executive Vice President, TV Distribution and Digital Sales of Lionsgate. “iPRI has the potential to completely change the way we program and market movies in the on-demand category; and based on these early successes we look forward to continue testing its capabilities in partnership with TVN and additional distributors in the coming months.”
Other TVN programming partners tested their free on-demand content to determine the most effective menu categories for various programs and how the menu mapping correlates to increased views.
“We immediately embraced this novel approach of providing programmers flexibility with their VOD offering, however we were very concerned about the potential impact on our VOD systems. The systems are very sensitive to metadata changes,” said John Farwell, Vice President of Operations at Bend Broadband. “I am happy to report that the net result of the trial was an increase in VOD usage with no negative impact on the platform – which is why we are expanding our use of this process in 2008.”
iPRI is included at no additional cost to TVN distributors as part of the company’s interactive, Emmy-nominated asset management system, ADONISS. TVN will continue to rollout iPRI capabilities to TVN distributors and programming partners in the coming months.
